PFW 2019

Fashion Week in Paris sets the tone for the rest of the world…and this year they didn’t shy away from denim. More than New York or LA, Paris has a habit of showing the world just how fashion in the coming year will look..and this year didn’t disappoint.

We had Isabel Marant updating her signature French ease with some acid wash and Junya Watanabe giving his artisanal touch to reconstructed denim. Then there was the talk of the season, Celine, in which Hedi Slimane sent one of the biggest trends, the paperbag waist.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who has an Instagram account. The blend of street style, high fashion, and French chic was out loud all over IG.

Check out what these trends and more of what walked the runways of Paris below.

The inVESTment

The denim vest has made it’s return on the runways of Paris. For the Spring 2019 season, it was oversized with a borrowed from the boyfriend look…with some added distressing to bring in a bit of the ’90s.

Patchwork

JUNYA WATANABE, ISABEL MARANT, UNRAVEL

Patchwork was huge over at New York Fashion Week and it has continued over into Paris, but the takes cannot be more different. The designers of the French capital, gave the concept an artisanal touch. Isabel Marant went for quilted techniques and Junya Watanabe kept to his signature repair aesthetic. Unravel finished the trend off by pairing it with sport tech fabrics like nylon to give the technique some new grounds.

The Feminine Mystique

CHANEL, BALENCIAGA, JUNYA WATANABE

This season has taken a feminine approach (as seen at NYFW’s at shows like Proenza Schouler).

For Paris, designers kept with this femininity. Chanel chose to keep their jeans loose for a beach themed collection and pairing them with lace and their staple tweeds. Balenciaga sent down a skirt that hugged curves and had some swing with ruffles. Then Japnaese designer Junya Watanabe showed off kilter pieces…from petticoat lined denim to a bodycon patchwork gown showing true craftsmanship of the rigid textile.

CELINE, ISABEL MARANT, BALMAIN

The biggest trend of the whole month of shows would have to be the paperbag waist and it has already made an impact. This trend had denim takes at Celine, Marant and Balmain – and even making its rounds with the streetstyle crowd. So if there is one trend that you should invest in – no relation to the vest trend above – it is the paperbag. Size up on your styles and start cinching away now cause it is sure to be one that’ll fill your Instagram feeds.

Maximum Overload

ISABEL MARANT, UNRAVEL, JUNYA WATANABE

Designers were piling on as much denim into one look as possible. At Marant, looks walked the runway in double denim and in denim draped head to toe. Unravel showed their iteration of the denim trench. Denim king this season, Junya Watanabe, let denim infuse all of his looks, showing off a craftsmanship and youthful mindset in new and interesting ways.
