How To Fade A Black T Shirt

Sometimes, faded black t-shirts look better than fresh black tees.

Think about it:

Would Kurt Cobain have exuded the same grungy, chic style if all of his t-shirts were brand new? Probably not.

The problem, of course, is that it takes work to fade a black t-shirt. You have to wear it repeatedly for years to weather it.

Or, if you want to expedite the process, you can try one of these methods:

Soak it in salt: Salt causes weathering. If you place your shirt in a quart of water with 2 cups of iodized salt and 1/4 cup of sodium bicarbonate, it’ll drain some of the pigment from the fabric.

Hang it in the sun: The sun also drains color from fabric. Hang your shirt on a clothesline outside for a few days (or even weeks) and it’ll fade in no time. Make sure that you hang the shirt so that both sides are exposed, as placing it flat will only fade one side.

Bleach it: Bleach removes black dye real fast. Mix 1/2 a cup with some warm water, soak it for 5 minutes, and wash it. Your shirt will age 20 years in less than a half hour*.

*When bleaching clothes, make sure to wear gloves. Be careful not to splash the water, either, as bleach is dangerous for the eyes.
